Healthcare Improvement Scotland was established in April 2011. Part of their role is to undertake inspections of independent healthcare services across Scotland. Their inspectors check that independent healthcare services are complying with necessary standards and regulations. They do this by carrying out assessments and inspections. These inspections may be announced or unannounced.
Healthcare Improvement Scotland has published its report relating to an announced inspection visit to Surehaven Glasgow. The inspection visit took place on Wednesday 21 September 2011.
Each service is graded under Quality Themes and Quality Statements. HIS may not assess all Quality Themes and Quality Statements. They do not give one overall grade for an inspection.
They grade each heading as follows:
6 Excellent
5 Very Good
4 Good
3 Adequate
2 Weak
1 Unsatisfactory
Based on the findings of this inspection, our service was awarded the following grades:
Quality Theme 1 - Quality of care and support: 4 - Good
Quality Theme 2 - Quality of environment: 4 - Good
Quality Theme 3 - Quality of staffing: 4 – Good
Garry Walker, Hospital Manager at Surehaven Glasgow commented “The staff at Surehaven Glasgow have worked extremely hard to maintain high standards of care for all of our patients since opening in late June 2010. The positive feedback from the HIS inspection team is very supportive and encouraging and, importantly, the comments of our patients reflects the endeavours of our dedicated skilled staff”.

Reports in the media have highlighted concerns over the high numbers of ex armed forces personnel suffering from mental disorders with unmet needs
Surehaven Glasgow has a particular expertise in assessment and treatment of patients who have previously served in the Armed Forces.
As well as offering our normal assessment and treatment pathway the Hospital Manager is available to advise mental health teams on appropriate management of patients prior to transfer or advice on their management within their current environment. This service is cost free.
“When people come back from a war situation, they sometimes can have moderate to severe depressive symptoms,” according to Major Garry Walker, an expert in post-traumatic stress disorder at Surehaven Hospital.
He said: “More commonly they abuse alcohol or other substances to help them sleep because they may have nightmares about particular situations.”
For many, these symptoms lessen as time goes on. For a small minority of people it causes lasting damage. (BBC News Scotland 2010)

Surehaven Glasgow is delighted to announce the new, Low Secure Mental Health Service at Drumchapel, has been granted registration by the Scottish Commission for Care after a robust registration process.
The opening of the hospital marks the culmination of a vision to offer a bespoke facility to the people of Scotland whose mental health problems require specialist care and treatment. Surehaven Glasgow will assist the NHS by being part of the solution for patients who are sometimes placed a considerable distance from their home area.
Surehaven Glasgow is a 17 bed unit. It will treat patients between the ages of 18 to 65 suffering from a mental disorder.
The £5 million project, developed by Surehaven Glasgow Ltd, a subsidiary of Shaw healthcare, of St Mellons, in Cardiff, will be officially opened in August.
Having received regulatory approval, and with the initial appointment of Dr Luqman Khan and a Multi Disciplinary Team, Surehaven is ready to serve the NHS by assessing and admitting patients who require a specialist service.
Surehaven’s aims to work closely with Scotland’s NHS and Social Services to develop future services to meet the needs of those who require quality care, treatment and support.
Ewan McLean, Surehaven’s Director of Operations for Scotland said: ‘I am delighted that the Care Commission has approved Surehaven Glasgow. The inspection process is thorough and very important. We have worked very hard in partnership with them to meet all the standards.’
‘This has been a team effort and I would like to thank my staff, for their support over the last year during the building of the hospital.’
Approximately one hundred new jobs have been created as a result of the project in Drumchapel and Surehaven have worked closely with the local Job Centre plus team to encourage local applications.
A range of treatments and therapy services from qualified staff will be available for most mental health problems, including Acquired Brain Injury.
Surehaven Glasgow is rapidly taking shape as the only private purpose built low secure Mental Health Hospital in Lanarkshire.
In September 2009, Ewan McLean (Director of Operations) set up office in temporary accommodation in Glasgow city centre and was joined by Kirstie Gordon, Senior Administrator in early October 2009. Kirstie brings with her 13 years administrative and office management experience in both the public and private sector.
Both Ewan and Kirstie have been busy establishing relationships with key people within NHS Scotland and meetings are taking place to discuss/secure placement of patients in Surehaven Glasgow.
The team are also running a recruitment campaign online and in the local job centre, where they hope to secure candidates from the local area. (For details of current vacancies or to request an application pack, contact Kirstie Gordon on 0141 944 3990 or glasgow@surehaven.co.uk).
Garry Walker joined the team on 25 January 2010 as Hospital Manager. Garry brings with him extensive knowledge and experience in the mental health care field; having previously managed a service providing care and treatment to ex-service personnel with mental health issues.
